Test results for the 2012-13 school year have not yet been released by the state. Schools and districts receive an API score and an AYP report based on the STAR. In the spring students across the state participate in the State Testing And Reporting (STAR) program. Students are tested in the content areas of Language Arts & Mathematics. Additioanl testing in Science takes place for 5th & 8th graders and in History for 8th graders. Students in 4th & 7th grade also took the Writing portion of the STAR in early March.
The Academic Performance Index (API)
The purpose of the API is to measure the academic performance and growth of schools. The API score is calculated using the CST results for all grade levels. Each year schools must reach growth targets based on the previous year's API score. For the 2011-12 school year we had an API score (based on spring 2012 testing) of 808 with a growth of 43 points! As part of our Annual School Improvement Plan, our staff spends considerable time at the beginning of the school year analyzing data to help us determine where we need to focus our attention.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
The AYP is a measure of how the school is progressing towards the federal goal of 100% proficiency by the year 2014 in Math and Language Arts as described in the No Child Left Behind legislation. Students scores are rated on a five point scale: 1 (Far-Below Basic), 2 (Below Basic), 3, (Basic), 4 (Proficient), and 5 (Advanced). We made significant gains in both Math and Language Arts. For Spring 2012 57.3% of our students were at the Proficient or Advanced level in Math and in Language Arts we had 58.7% of our students at the Proficient or Advanced level. There are three main subgroups that are reported as part of the AYP report: White, Hispanic, and Socio-Economically Disadvantaged students. We showed growth with every subgroup in both Language Arts and Math except for one subgroup. Overall we me 18 out of 21 AYP Targets.
