- Our Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is a necessary prerequisite for a successful school career. Loss of school time places a student at a serious disadvantage both in terms of completing assignments and maintaining enthusiasm. Continued absences may produce a lack of interest and motivation to continue the education process. California State Law requires every boy and girl to attend school until 18 years of age, or until high school is completed. Absences due to any one or more of the following causes, once verified, are considered excused:
1. Personal illness
2. Quarantine directed by a county or city health officer
3. Appointments with doctors, dentists, etc.
4. Attending funeral services of immediate family members
Unexcused absences occur when students stay out of school when they should be here. Oversleeping, hunting, fishing and shopping trips, for example, are not considered excusable absences. Truancy occurs when a student willfully stays away from school, generally without the parents’ knowledge.
Verification of Absence by Parent - Whenever school is missed for any reason, the attendance office personnel must be notified. Parents are encouraged to phone the school to report their child’s absence by phoning 830-3340. Our voice mail system is available to take calls when the office staff is unavailable. Parents are asked to leave their child’s name, date of absence, reason for absence, and relationship to the caller when contacting the school. If a phone call is not made on the day of the student’s absence, the student must bring a note from a parent or guardian on the day s/he returns to school explaining the reason for the absence. Absences must be excused by a parent, either by a phone call or written note within 48 hours, or the absence will become unexcused and could become a truancy.
Admission to Class - After an absence, students must obtain an admit slip from the attendance office between 7:45 and 8:05 a.m. All students must report to class on time. Students will not be allowed to enter their class, after an absence, without an admit slip from the attendance office. Students who do not bring excuses, or fail to obtain an admit slip from the office before 8:05 a.m. will be given detention and asked to bring a note from a parent or guardian the next day or a second detention will be given.
Doctor’s Appointment/Early Releases, etc. - Students are required to bring a note to the attendance office to obtain a pass in order to leave the campus during the school day for doctor appointments, family business, etc. It is desirable that a parent come to the attendance office to pick up the student. All students must sign out before leaving school. No one may leave the school grounds without permission from the attendance office.
*Note - No one may pick up a child, or excuse an absence, that is not on the school Emergency Card. Children staying temporarily with others must have a letter from the parent/guardian on file in the attendance office.
