Hello West High Families:
Well the first semester is coming to a close. It has been a great start to the year. Encourage your students to begin studying for finals now. Have your students work with their teachers on any makeup work early. Don’t let them wait until the last couple of days. Have them get help now. I want to thank all of you for your support thus far this year. I have enjoyed meeting so many of you at various events.
As we head into the holiday season, I hope we take opportunities to help and serve others. When I was growing up in San Jose, we had a winter when there were a couple of days where the temperature dropped to freezing. I know, hard to believe that the perfect weather of San Jose dropped to freezing. So my high school friend and I were driving around and saw a number of people sleeping outside without homes in the freezing cold and we thought we needed to do something to help. For a couple of knuckle head teenage boys it was probably pretty amazing to our parents that we were thinking of coming out of our being “cool teenagers” and only thinking of ourselves to having this idea of helping other people we didn’t even know. So we decided to sleep outside ourselves during the freeze and get donations or sponsors to donate money based on how long we slept outside. My friend and I made it through the whole night, although it was awfully cold. We earned a couple hundred dollars and took it to one of the local shelters. I guess my point is there are opportunities all around us to help other people. If a couple cocky young teenagers can come out of their comfort zone and do something to help others it is possible for anyone to do the same. That experience hopefully helped someone in need in a small manner, but more importantly helped to change my outlook on life and the importance of serving others. This is a great season to take care of others.
